Irish post-punk poets Fontaines D.C. release their highly-anticipated third album Skinty Fia today. The album follows on from the success of 2020s A Hero's Death and to celebrate the release, we've got one deluxe double vinyl of the album to give away to one lucky winner, signed by the band!
Used colloquially as an expletive, Skinty Fia roughly translates from the Irish language into English as "the damnation of the deer"; the spelling crassly anglicized, and its meaning diluted through generations. Part bittersweet romance, part darkly political triumph - the songs ultimately form a long-distance love letter, one that laments an increasingly privatized culture in danger of going the way of the extinct Irish giant deer.
The atmospheric 'Roman Holiday' is the third single from the album and serves as a great introduction to the themes of the album, with frontman Grian Chatten reflecting on his experiences of moving to London and what it was like embracing the city as an Irish person. “‘Roman Holiday’ makes me think of the wide streets of North London in the summer and the urge to discover them at night time,” Chatten said of the song. “The thrill of being a gang of Irish people in London with a bit of a secret language and my first flat with my girlfriend.”
The band has received a whole host of class reviews in the run-up to the release of Skinty Fia. CLASH Magazine describes the album as "powerful and probing" and Mojo acknowledges how far the band has come from the youthful buoyancy on their debut album Dogrel, observing that "Fontaines D.C. sound full of new life". The Line Of Best Fit declares the record: "a rich, full-bodied third entry, with Fontaines DC proving they’re not only here to stay, but here to dominate."
