As anticipation builds for the release of The Royston Club's debut album Shaking Hips and Crashing Cars, there's never been a better time to get involved. With new single 'Shallow Tragedy' (Run On Records) in rotation on BBC Radio 1, we caught up with the very busy band for a special edition of TM Breakthrough. To sweeten the deal, we've got a signed and personalised lyric sheet to a TRC song of your choice for one lucky winner.
The Royston Club are a four-piece indie band formed in Wrexham, North Wales in early 2019. The band describe their forthcoming debut album Shaking Hips and Crashing Cars as “a raw, frenetic crowd of songs, through which you can hear the drunken nights spent screaming our favourite songs at the top of our lungs and the consequent hangovers, each bouncing gig and its dormant green room; the freedom of touring along with the panicked inner nag to get a real job; the brotherly love we have for one another and the burning appetite to make music that we cherish and enjoy.” We at Townsend Music say that this band have turned our heads with a killer run of singles leading into the release of what promises to be a phenomenal debut; fans of homegrown guitar rock from The Reytons to The Lottery Winners and Red Rum Club to The Lathums will find a lot to love here.
TM: Over the last four years, we’ve seen The Royston Club grow from the 'Shawshank' demo to being a national concern with singles such as 'Mrs Narcissistic' and 'Cold Sweats'. Your new single 'Shallow Tragedy', taken from your debut album Shaking Hips and Crashing Cars, dropped yesterday and is already picking up plays from Gemma Bradley on none other than BBC Radio 1. How does it feel to be on this stage of the journey with all this excitement building and the release of your debut album finally in sight?
TRC: It’s all very exciting at the minute. The debut album is such an important milestone for all new bands and at points in our journey it felt so far away. It’s almost upon us now. We're picking up some great support and we’ve got a great fan base pushing it along. It’s all crazy to us!
TM: You worked with up-and-coming producer Alex Quinn on the album, who has already made a name for himself with well-received records from the likes of SPINN and Stanleys. How was Alex to work with and what made him the man for the job?
TRC: Alex is a great guy and a close mate of ours so the two weeks in the studio with him didn’t feel like work at all. We all get on and he understands fundamentally what we want to do with our music without us having to explain ourselves.
TM: One thing that makes The Royston Club stand out from other guitar bands is your regular range of acoustic short-form videos on YouTube and your social channels that feature the band covering artists from The Smiths to Elliot Smith. Can you talk about these acoustic cover versions and how they fit into the whole TRC experience?
TRC: During lockdown, we couldn’t meet up and practice new tunes together so decided to start doing some covers in our gardens. They went down a storm on Twitter and we loved playing them ourselves so have just carried on churning them out sporadically over the last couple years.
"I wouldn’t say they’re part of the ‘TRC experience’ but they’re a fun little side dish I guess!" - The Royston Club
TM: You join the ranks of Run On Records (The Coral, The Dream Machine, Shader) which is itself an imprint of Modern Sky Records, (Jamie Webster, Lottery Winners, Red Rum Club) to be part of what over the last five years has become a powerhouse of a company in the indie-rock sphere. How important is it to you guys to be on the Modern Sky roster?
TRC: It’s great to be in and around big names like them and the label obviously knows what they’re doing. We’ve got a great team behind us who want what’s best for us and have the knowledge to really help out.
TM: Finally, why should anyone whose first taste of The Royston Club is this article head to your Official Store and pre-order a copy of Shaking Hips and Crashing Cars?
TRC: We’ve made an album we’re very proud of and believe people will enjoy it. Plus the more people who buy it, the more music we can make in the future!
